UNIBEN is yet to commence UTME/Direct Entry Admission Exercise for 2017/2018 Academic Session


The attention of the authorities of the University of Benin has been drawn to a fake University of Benin website created by criminal elements to defraud unsuspecting members of the public under the guise of offering admission to their children or wards.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, the statutory examination body in charge of UTME/DIRECT ENTRY Admission is yet to release the guidelines for 2017/2018 admission process, neither has the Board given the University the go ahead to do so. This press release, therefore, serves as a warning to members of the public to be wary of such and other related questionable overtures.

In addition, the office of the Registrar is not in charge of admission, as there is a board in the University saddled with the responsibility of admitting qualified candidates into various courses offered by the University.

JUPEB Admission Registration Deadline 2017/2018 Extended

Management of the University of Benin, (UNIBEN), has extended the deadline for the application of JUPEB (Pre-Degree) Foundation programme for the 2017/2018 academic session.The new deadline for registration is now August 28th, 2017.

Admission into the various JUPEB programme shall be through entrance examination to be conducted on the 19th of August, 2017 by 9am at the Ugbowo Campus of the university.


To qualify for the entrance examination into the various Pre-Degree Studies, candidates must satisfy the stated general and specific requirements for admission.

Candidates are advised to have a valid e-mail account before starting the application process (not the cyber-cafe’s mail). All application MUST be completed through the university’s website.


  1. Visit and fill out the registration form. (Ensure you provide all necessary information. Note that * means compulsory fields).
  2. An immediate mail will be sent to the e-mail address provided. Open your mail to get your system generated ID and Password that you will use to login.
  3. On, Enter your user name and the password from the mail to login.
  4. To begin the application process, please click on ‘Edit application record’ and provide all required information and upload your passport photograph.
  5. Upload a clear “1 x 1” COLOURED passport photograph with red background in JPEG format only. NOTE that the photograph uploaded will be the only valid ID for all admitted candidates throughout their stay in the University of Benin. FAILURE TO UPLOAD THE SPECIFIED PASSPORT PHOTOGRAPH WILL LEAD TO DISQUAILIFICATION AND FAILURE/FORFEITURE OF ADMISSION.
  6. To pay for the Application, click on “Add online payment ticket” at the bottom of the page, then click on “College Pay” on the top left corner of the page, follow the instruction to pay the application fee with an ATM-Enabled Verve or Master Card from any commercial Bank.

Call for Application: CARTA PhD Fellowship 2017/2018

The University of Benin, Benin-city is joining the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA). CARTA is an initiative of eight African universities, four African research institutes, and select non-African partners. CARTA offers an innovative model for doctoral training in sub-Saharan Africa to strengthen the capacity of participating institutions to conduct and lead internationally-competitive research.The multi-disciplinary CARTA program is open to staff of participating institutions who are interested in undertaking their PhD research on topics relevant to the broad fields of public and population health. University of Benin, Nigeria, in participating in the Consortium for the first time is keen to support the training of a multidisciplinary team of junior faculty members with research interests in the broad areas of pharmacovigilance. We welcome applications from any discipline, such as public health, pharmacy, clinical sciences, demography, social and behavioral sciences, communication studies, among others, as long as the research question aims to contribute to addressing a significant public and population health issue in Africa. Special consideration will be given to those whose research touch on the broad area of pharmacovigilance.

Over the medium-term, CARTA aims to produce a critical mass of high-quality graduates trained to address the complex issues surrounding health and development in Africa, retain them in the region, and provide them with a vibrant intellectual environment, as well as viable and challenging research and growth opportunities. CARTA aims to achieve reforms in higher education by:
1. Assisting universities to develop enriching and vibrant academic and research environments;
2. Supporting promising African scholars who teach at affiliated universities to obtain high-quality doctoral training in public and population health-related fields; and
3. Supporting graduates of the program to become research leaders.

CARTA is currently offering a collaborative doctoral training program in public and population health. This program has been developed in response to the great challenges faced by Africa’s institutions of higher education in addressing the training and retention of the next generation of academics in the region. Women are particularly encouraged to apply.

Specifically, CARTA seeks to fund candidates who will be future leaders in their institutions; that is, young, capable, and committed individuals who, in time, will ensure that their universities will be the institutions of choice for future generations of academics and university administrators wishing to make a positive impact on public and population health in Africa.

Successful applicants will attend CARTA’s innovative series of Joint Advanced Seminars (JAS) for cohorts of doctoral students admitted and registered in the participating African universities. Both the development and delivery of these courses are jointly-led by regional and international experts. The seminars consist of didactic sessions, discussions, demonstrations, and practice labs.

These activities collectively serve to:
1. Expose students to key theories and concepts, seminal readings, and research methods of disciplines relevant to public and population health;
2. Train students in critical research skills; and
3. Build and maintain a network of researchers for scientific collaborations, professional support, and mutually beneficial exchange of scientific resources.

The advanced seminars are offered four times over the fellowship period for each CARTA cohort intake. They build skills and conceptual depth from year to year. Each JAS runs for 3 to 4 weeks.

Specific topics covered in each JAS include the following:
JAS-1 builds critical thinking, technical skills, and other core research competencies, and introduce students to the essential concepts and seminal articles of the disciplines brought together under CARTA. March 2018
JAS-2 focuses on data management and analysis. Fellows learn to use software packages for qualitative and quantitative data management and analyses. Practice sessions use real research data and current software packages for hands-on training. November 2018
JAS-3 focuses on data presentation, the doctoral dissertation, and scientific writing and communication skills to facilitate results dissemination. August 2020
JAS-4 addresses professional development including curriculum design and delivery, skills to raise and manage research funds, grant writing and research management. JAS-4 is also designed to serve as an opportunity for senior fellows to practice mentoring of junior fellows through discussions and laboratory sessions, software training, and general information sharing. March 2021

During the 2017/2018 academic year, the CARTA program is planning to offer up to 28 PhD fellowships. A CARTA Fellowship, which is tenable at one of the participating African universities, includes the cost of fellows’ participation in the advanced seminars; a modest monthly stipend; small grants for research activities; a laptop loaded with relevant software; funds for travel to conferences, as well as costs for participating in joint program activities. The fellowship runs for a maximum of four years. Fellowships cover tuition fees, medical insurance, and other university fees in special circumstances only.

Partner institutions have committed to continue paying Fellows’ salaries (or equivalent) and to modify workloads for the fellows to enable them to fully participate in CARTA organized activities pertaining to their PhD program and also to concentrate on their PhD studies. Fellows are encouraged to seek supplemental funding to cover additional costs of their doctoral program.

  • A Masters degree in a relevant field.
  • Prior admission into a PhD program is not required for application but awards are contingent on such admission being obtained at one of the participating African universities.
  • Applicants for this program must be teaching or research staff at one of the participating African institutions and should be committed to contributing towards building capacity at their institutions.
  • Applicants’ PhD research proposal must be related to public and population health.
  • Fellowships are only open to people who have not yet registered for a PhD or are in the very early stages (first year) of the PhD program.
  • Applicants must commit to participation in all four annual residential Joint Advanced Seminars (JASes), and to engage in inter-seminar activities designed to keep fellows actively engaged and in continual communication with peers and mentors.
  • Male applicants must be under 40 years of age and female applicants under 45 years of age.

The deadline for submissions is August 25, 2017.
If successful at the university selection level, the CARTA secretariat will inform and contact you to proceed to the next level.

Successful applicants at the university selection level will be expected to:

  1. Complete an online-based pre-JAS, Part I tasks
  2. A set of competency courses (August 28 – September 8, 2017) These will be available online and CARTA will send you the link.
  3. Send a full application to the CARTA secretariat. The deadline for submission of the full application is September 8, 2017.
  4. Final fellowship decision, which is independent of the university application, will be communicated by CARTA secretariat by November 1, 2017.
